Revised: 8/18/06 9:15 PM
WELCOME TO THE FRONT RANGE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
This document describes the Front Range Photographic Society (FRPS) and its purpose. It will guide you through the club’s activities, and aid you in the preparation of your works for competition. Additionally, it will provide information regarding the levels of competition available, and opportunities to further develop your skills.
PURPOSE OF THE FRONT RANGE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
The purpose of the FRPS, as stated in the constitution is as follows:
- To promote learning about photography, provide a forum for the discussion of photographic concepts and exhibition of photographs.
- To provide members opportunities to develop their photographic skills, learn from others, view the work of others, and provide a forum for speakers who are knowledgeable in the field of photography.
FEATURES
To accomplish these goals, FRPS includes the following:
- Photo-Educational Programs - Programs that are planned by the members and draw on the photographic talent both from within the club and from the photographic community. Planned field trips, workshops, and demonstrations are also included.
- Monthly Photo Commentary - Monthly photo reviews and comment sessions are conducted among the club members. Traditional and digital images are welcome and comments can be collected publicly or privately.
- Quarterly Photo Judging - Monthly photo contests are conducted among the club members and are judged by qualified judges drawn from the local photographic community. Both slide and print competitions are conducted, with two levels of competition in slides. Traditional and digital images are welcome.
- Year-End Awards, Program, Competition, and Banquet - A year-end event is conducted in December to wrap up the year’s activities with recognition of the efforts of members, awarding the best of the best, and testing the member’s photographic versatility.
GENERAL INFORMATION
FRPS is a nonprofit organization, founded in March 2004. FRPS has bylaws–copies of which are available. Membership information is available to registered members via the website. The FRPS website address is http://www.frontrangephotosociety.com.
Members are encouraged to visit the website often for current information, view the galleries, and participate in the online forum.
Regular meetings are normally held third Tuesday of each month, except December. All meetings start at 7:00 p.m. and are held at Casa Alvarez in Lafayette, CO, usually in the upstairs dining room. Casual pre-meeting conversation usually begins over dinner starting around 6:30pm.
A typical meeting consists of a short business agenda, a program, and competition. Membership dues are determined annually and increases are voted on by the membership. Current dues are $18 for single, $24.00 for family, and $10 for student. Your constructive suggestions and comments toward improving our club, its programs and activities, as well as your questions, are always welcome.
ORGANIZATION
FRPS cannot exist without good leadership. Also important is the willingness of members to volunteer for positions. If many members each volunteer a little time and effort, the work of operating the club will be distributed and no one will be overburdened. We hope that members will accept positions of increasing responsibility in the operation of the club. Elected positions required annually are:
- President
- Vice-President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
MONTHLY PHOTO CONTEST
Competition is held each Quarter at the start of the meeting. It is intended to recognize submitted images which have the best combination of composition, creativity, and technical proficiency. Whether your photograph places or not, the quality of a photograph lies with the beholder. As they say, one person’s coal is another’s diamond. Rather, the real benefit of this activity to give the audience the opportunity to share in the knowledge of how photographs were taken and the techniques used.
Formats may be “Slides”, “Color Prints”, “Monochrome/B&W Prints”, and “Digitally Manipulated Prints”. Subjects may be “Open” or “Theme”.
Printing a photo taken with a digital camera, or scanning/printing an image is not digital manipulation, even if slight color/exposure adjustments were made. However, if “physical” changes were made with software (i.e., removing a branch, turning sun green, adding a sailboat from one image of a lake to another, etc.) then the final image shall be considered manipulated.
Hand-tinted B&W prints shall be included in the “B&W” category.
Specific competition(s) will be announced in the newsletter and at the meeting prior to the actual night of competition.
Limit 2 entries per person per category each month. Entries must be signed in by 7:15 pm on the meeting night to qualify for judging. All prints must be matted and/or mounted, and/or framed.
Each month, the competition is judged by an outside person, using a 1-10 point scale. This judge also gives a verbal critique of the winning images. In the absence of an outside judge, a panel of 3 persons in attendance at the meeting is appointed to judge the competition, also using a 1-10 point scale. In this situation, no critiques are given.
Ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd categories with 8 or less entries. For categories with more than 8 entries, 1st Honorable Mention, and 2nd Honorable Mention will be awarded in addition to the other three awards.
If an image receives a ribbon, it shall be retired from further FRPS competitions. However, it may be included in non-competitive exhibitions sponsored by the club.
All contest winners will be asked to provide a digital version of their image suitable for web display in the competition gallery of the FRPS website. They should be reduced to 96dpi with the longest side being no more than 600 pixels. They should be watermarked and copyright stamped with the photographer’s information. Unstamped images will be stamped with “© 200n -
At the end of the year, the sum of each person’s scores in each format shall be totaled for consideration as FRPS Photographer of the Year for that format.
